Search question

Postby Bruce » Thu Feb 04, 2010 3:37 pm

I'll ask my question by example. In RB 2.6, I open the search window, and for address type 201 North 300 West, Morgan, UT and hit find. .... nothing ... hit enter ... nothing ... hit find ... nothing. No activity at all, no messages, nothing. But when I remove the street address and just have it find Morgan, UT ... works fine. So really, what's so complicated with the street address? and why no "error" message or other notification when it can't find an address. Thanks.

I think you have found a little bug in the the data given to us by our data suppliers Tele Atlas.

If you type in:
201 N 300 W, UT or 201 North 300 West, UT then it finds all similar addresses in UT, of which there are 41, but nothing for Morgan.

If you type in:
201 North 300 West, 84050 or 201 N 300 W, 84050 (which is the zip code I got from Google)
then it does not find anything

If you type in:
201 Field Street, 84050 or 201 Field Street, Morgan (which is the local name for the road according to Google) RouteBuddy finds it because the Tele Atlas database is storing it as that even though the map data shows it as N 300 W

However, when RouteBuddy finds it, the address waypoint is placed on the corner of W 100 N as opposed to W 200 N.

I think this is a bit of an unlucky one, the principle with finding addresses in RouteBuddy is that all you should need is the number, street name and town or, preferably, zip code but sometimes, as is shown here, the Tele Atlas data that it is derived from is incorrect.

My house has been built for over 5 years now and still it is not on the latest Tele Atlas data! Unfortunately we do not have the resource to update the data from customer reports as Google do, i.e. they will take the raw data as supplied from any number of data suppliers which they use, and update it from customer feedback.

No worries, and thanks for letting us know.

A real nice part of the US you live in; I really enjoyed my rides around Asheville and along the BRP a while back. :)

Yep ... it's really a beautiful area. Just as FYI ... the address in Utah is a home we are in process of buying so we'll be moving to another beautiful ... but very different, place. Take care.

Would like to ask another SEARCH question.

In my case, I did find my location on a search- but I can't do ANYthing with it!
RB won't let me modify it or drag it to ANY sidebar folder. Of cource when I select any sidebar folder, I've lost it.

S how do I save a location found in a search?

Here's what the manual says: http://www.routebuddy.com/routebuddy/ma ... to/search/

What was the location you searched for, so we can repeat it here at the office and advise.

OK- am NOT using Topos, just a regular RB US road map.

RB > Search > Find:

Here are some sample entries:

A road- "Sheldon, Prescott, AZ"

or a specific street address-

1711 East Speedway Boulevard, Tucson, AZ

5 Blossom Street, Boston, MA

Yes RB "finds" these, and displays them on a map section. But my point is I can do NOTHING with the found location! If I click the map icon, it highlights, but that's it. I cannot 'dbl-click' to edit, nor can I drag it anywhere- it won't move. Click out of 'Search', back to 'Locations', and the last 'Location' (Not search/Find item) is now displayed. Reclick 'Search' and the Search/Find string is erased, and the map area stays to what was last displayed in 'Locations'

The part of your instructions " . . . that you set up a new Place folder before you go into Search so that you have somewhere to readily drag the addresses and Points of Interest you have found and want to use. " Seems impossible to comply with.

Again, I can't even move ( the map icon of the 'found' location) let alone get to to the sidebar. The cursor only highlights it.

Am I missing something?

Hi,

The paragraphs in the manual say:
The bottom of Search window Content Area will change into a Find facility where you can choose to Find by Address; by all Points of Interest or by a sub-category of Points of Interest. Go to the Find a Location topic for more details on searching for an address or point of interest.

It is important to understand that the search window is a facility to search only. Once you have found the address or point of interest you are searching for, drag it into your Place folder to store the address or point of interest to use however you wish e.g. make a route.

I agree the second paragraph is not explicit enough, it should say:

It is important to understand that the search window is a facility to search only. Once you have found the address or point of interest you are searching for, highlight the detail line in the source list below the map window and drag it into your Place folder to store the address or point of interest to use however you wish e.g. make a route.

Howdy ... original poster/question asker/trouble maker here <g>. I will report that once I got used to this feature (and read that section of the manual) I have found it quite easy to use. I would like to suggest a refinement/feature along these lines please. Again, I'll use an example; I find my home, then place it in the places folder/list, and ingeniously label it "Home." So far so good ...

Then a couple days later I open my "Home" place and begin to explore roads/features in my neighborhood and see the road a friend has mentioned as headed of to a great hiking spot so I follow the road and look around ... an hour later I'm looking at a National Park two states away when the South Texas red-headed redneck (spousal unit) hollers that If I don't shut that %#$*^ computer down and come to bed she's gonna use the shotgun on it ... an offer (command) not to be ignored or taken lightly ... so I comply, quickly.

Then, assuming I survive, the next time I start RB and click-on/select "Home" I'm looking at a park two states away. Can I choose to make a place i.e., "Home" sticky so that no matter where I roam I'm always back home when I start again. If not sticky, then perhaps an option to save or not save the new location. Although my first choice would be to have the map revert to "Home" automatically.

Hi Bruce:

Sorry- I'm not familiar with procedures for making a home 'sticky'
But the part about shutting down the computer NOW- Definitely been there, done that <G>

Hi guys,

Once you have saved a search (be it a waypoint you have labelled home or whatever!) into a place folder, it is then sticky!
Just go to the Place folder click on the waypoint in the detail list below the map window and you will be zoomed into the place where "home" is on the map.

When you have done that make sure you take a breather and do the ironing!

Regarding Reebarn's question about dragging the search item into the Place folder, I will further itemise the procedure (if anyone else is having problems with this then please let me know, or if anyone can add to my explanation then please do!!).

1. Make a new place folder or use one you have already set up.
2. Not imperative, but whilst in the Place folder I would suggest moving to roughly the area of the map you want to search (more of a comfort thing than anything!)
3. Click the search tool to get into the Search map Window.
4. Below the window are fields where you choose to search by address or point of interest. Use these to define your search.
5. Depending on your search criteria you will get either none (because the search parameters could not be found), one or more results. The results will display as icons on the map and lines of detail below the map window.
6. To save the search item you want to keep, highlight the detail line for the item in the part below the map window, click and drag it onto your chosen Place folder. Do not try to drag the icon from the map window on to the Pace folder.
7. The item will now be saves in your Place Folder.
8. Either continue to search for more items in your Search window or return to the Place Folder to continue your work.

Jannion ... I'll have you know that I DO NOT iron! I cook, clean, do washing, clean out the cat box, and almost all other "tasks as assigned" but I don't iron! (Something was said about 30 years ago about, what was that word .... inept ... I believe it was <g>).

Now that we have re-established my manhood ... back to the maps. Ok, I see where I have, once again, missed something. Let's say I search for Texas, hard to find you know, then place the Texas map in my places folder. Later I select Texas and start looking around RB to the point that I'm looking at Montana when I close RB. Next time I open RB and select my Texas "place" ... the map of Montana comes up ... so "technically" I'm right, the map didn't stick <g>. However, what I just noticed (I've only had RB for a few years) is that the original search, listed below the map, is still there and clicking it takes me right back to Texas. More than one way to be inept ...

Hope everyone is having a good weekend ... take care ...
